Race Overview

EST. 1980

Victoria is the kind of race that draws you back. It starts and finishes at the Legislative Buildings on the Inner Harbour, and that setting does a lot of work. The early miles run along the southern edge of Vancouver Island, close to the water, in cool October air. The course is an out-and-back, so you know exactly what the second half holds. The moment everyone talks about is the finish on the Causeway with the Legislative Buildings right in front of you. It is worth every bit of the work to get there.

The course is not flat, but it is manageable. The gain is spread out rather than concentrated in one punishing climb, which means you can run it smart. Be patient on the outbound half. If you go with the cool air and the crowd energy early, you will feel it after the turnaround. Registration is open, no lottery required, but it sells out in summer, so get in early if you are targeting this one. It is a solid BQ course if you run it honestly, and a genuinely good day out even if you are not chasing a time.

Same route, both directions

The course is an out-and-back with modest total gain spread across the route. The highest point barely clears 90 feet, so no single climb is severe, but the cumulative gain across both directions means you are rarely on completely flat ground for long. Because you run the same terrain twice, you know what is coming on the return leg, which helps with pacing. The back half tends to be where races unravel, so resist going out hard on the outbound. Surface and exposure along the coast can introduce headwind on one direction depending on conditions. Overall the profile is manageable for a BQ attempt if you stay disciplined early.

What to expect

October in Victoria runs cool and sometimes damp. You are looking at a low-40s start, which feels cold in the corral but you will warm into it by mile three or four. Bring a throwaway layer. The afternoon high is mild enough that heat is rarely the problem, but wind off the water can be a factor on the exposed coastal stretches. Overall it is a good window for fast running, as long as you dress right at the start.
