Montreal Marathon

The Montreal Marathon runs point-to-point through one of Canada's most vivid cities in peak autumn, starting on an island and working through the heart of the city to a park finish. It's a genuine race, not a parade, and the course keeps you honest the whole way.

Race Overview

EST. 1979

The race starts on Île Sainte-Hélène at Parc Jean-Drapeau, which is a genuinely cool place to toe the line. You're on an island in the St. Lawrence River, and the city is right there in front of you. From the start you cross into Montreal proper and work through neighborhoods that shift character as you go. October in Montreal means the trees are turning, the crowds are bundled up, and the air is usually crisp enough to feel good early. The course rolls more than the net elevation suggests, so don't let the numbers fool you into running the first half too quick. Be patient in the early miles.

This is open registration, so getting in is straightforward. Sign up through Race Roster when the window opens and you're in. The field is a manageable size, which means no chaotic corrals and room to actually run your race. It is a Boston qualifier, but the BQ rate is low, which reflects the rolling course more than anything else. If a BQ is your goal, you'll need to run it well, not just finish. The metro serves both the start and finish, which makes the logistics simple. Worth sorting that out the night before so race morning is easy.

The course starts at Parc Jean-Drapeau on Île Sainte-Hélène and runs point-to-point to Parc Maisonneuve. Net elevation is nearly flat at 65 feet, but total gain sits at 624 feet, meaning the undulations are real and spread across the course rather than concentrated in one big climb. The highest point is modest, but the rolling terrain asks you to run by effort, not pace. There are no long descents to bank time on, and the point-to-point layout removes any psychological shortcuts. Plan for a working course rather than a fast one, and don't let the low net elevation convince you to go out hard.

What to expect

October in Montreal runs cool. The start is usually in the low-to-mid 40s, which feels cold in the corral, so bring a throwaway layer you don't mind leaving on the road. By the back half you'll have warmed up and the afternoon high is typically in the mid-60s. That's a reasonable range for racing, but the gap between start and finish temperature is wide enough to notice. Dress for the first few miles, not the last few.
