Race Overview

EST. 2010

Chester is one of those races that keeps selling out because runners keep coming back. It starts and finishes at Chester Racecourse, right in the city centre, and the course takes you out through the Cheshire countryside before bringing you home through the city walls. The route is genuinely flat. There are no brutal climbs, no leg-destroying descents. If you show up fit, this course will not hold you back.

The big moment is the finish. Coming back through Chester's medieval streets with a crowd around the racecourse is a proper payoff after the quieter rural miles. Those middle miles are where most people get into trouble, so be patient and don't burn everything chasing a fast first half. Entry is open registration through RunThrough on a first-come, first-served basis, and the field fills up, so if you've got a target date don't sit on it. Charity spots are available too if you miss the open wave. For a UK autumn marathon that's genuinely set up for a good time, this one is hard to beat.

Different start and finish

With a net elevation of essentially zero and a highest point just over 100 feet, Chester runs as flat as any road marathon in Britain. The course is point-to-point in character but loops back to Chester Racecourse, keeping the finish accessible. Modest elevation gain is spread across the full distance rather than concentrated in one stretch, so there are no significant climbs to force a pace reset. The low point dips slightly below sea level, reflecting gentle river-valley terrain. Pacing strategy can be aggressive from the gun. The main variable is wind on open rural sections in the middle miles, which can work for or against you depending on direction.

What to expect

October in Chester means cool and often overcast conditions, which is about as good as it gets for marathon racing. You'll likely start in the mid-40s, so a throwaway layer for the corral is a smart call. By the finish it's typically in the mid-50s, cool enough to run well through. Rain is always possible in northwest England in autumn, so plan for it but don't fear it. Wind on the open countryside sections can be the bigger factor, and it's worth checking the forecast the day before.
