St. George Marathon

St. George drops more than 2,500 feet from start to finish across the high Utah desert, giving runners one of the most reliably fast point-to-point courses in the country. The scenery is stark and open, and the course asks you to run smart before it lets you run fast.

Race Overview

EST. 1977

St. George is the race people train for when they want to go fast. It starts high in the Utah desert and runs mostly downhill into town over 26.2 miles. The course is point-to-point, so you're on buses before dawn heading up to the start, which sits above 5,200 feet. Dress for a cold corral wait. Once you're moving, the early miles trend downhill through open red-rock terrain and the views are genuinely something. The one thing everyone talks about is how tempting it is to go out too fast. Don't. The descent feels effortless in mile three and will wreck you by mile twenty if you let it pull you. Be patient early, let the course work with you, not for you.

This is a BQ-friendly course, and the conditions suit fast running most years. It does get warm by late morning, so the earlier you finish, the less heat you're managing. Pack a throwaway layer for the start and hydrate from the beginning, not just when you feel it. Registration is first-come, first-served with a cap of 5,000 runners, so mark your calendar for April 1 if you want a spot. It fills. Las Vegas is the closest major airport, and you'll need a rental car or shuttle since it's a solid two-hour drive. Book your hotel early; the town gets taken over race weekend. If you're chasing a time goal, this is one of the better setups you'll find.

Different start and finish

St. George starts above 5,200 feet and finishes near 2,700 feet, shedding elevation across 26.2 miles of point-to-point running through the Utah desert. The descent is not uniform. Early miles drop through open terrain where the gradient tempts you to bank time you haven't earned yet. The middle stretch flattens and rolls, where accumulated fatigue from running downhill catches up with you. The final miles into town are mostly flat. Altitude at the start is real and worth respecting, especially for runners training at sea level. Go out controlled, let the descent work for you rather than chase it, and you'll be in much better shape when the grade levels off.

What to expect

Expect a cold start, often in the high 30s up at the corrals in the desert. Bring a throwaway layer or an old hoodie you don't mind leaving on the side of the road. By the time you're into the back half, temperatures climb into the 60s and can push 70 by mid-morning. The drier air helps, but the warming trend is real. Start hydrating early and don't wait until you feel warm to take it seriously.
