Race Overview

EST. 1972

Milwaukee's lakefront marathon is one of those low-key races that quietly delivers. It starts near the lakefront and follows Lake Michigan out and back on a mostly flat paved course. The scenery is open water on one side and the city skyline on the other. The field is smaller and the atmosphere is relaxed, which some people love and some people miss. Either way, the course is genuinely built for a good time. Don't go out too hot on the first half just because it feels easy.

This is a solid BQ attempt race. The course is flat, the October temperatures are usually cool, and registration is open to anyone. It does cap at a set number of finishers, so don't sit on registering if you're planning your season around it. There's no lottery, no qualifier needed, just sign up when registration opens in January and you're in. Bring a throwaway layer for the start. The mornings by the lake can be colder than you expect, and a light wind off the water is pretty common.

The out-and-back course follows Lake Michigan's shoreline, keeping elevation gain modest and spread across the full distance. With 626 feet of gain on an out-and-back, climbs are gradual and repeated on the return leg, so there are no sharp uphills to blow up a race plan. The first half tends to run slightly easier, but the back half mirrors what you already ran, meaning any grade you enjoyed going out comes back at you. Pacing conservatively through mile 13 pays off here. Surface is primarily paved path and road. Exposure to lake winds is real, especially on the return leg, so factor that into your gear and effort choices.

What to expect

Early October in Milwaukee runs cool, which is mostly good news. Expect a crisp start in the mid-to-upper 40s that you'll warm into by the back half, when temps typically climb into the mid-50s. That's a solid window for racing. Lake Michigan can push a breeze through, so a light throwaway layer at the start is worth it. Most years this is a weather-cooperative day, but pack a hat just in case the wind has other ideas.

What to expect

Most travelling runners fly into MKE, about 6 miles from the start, right on the doorstep by rideshare or transit, roughly a 10-minute trip. Stay close to the start in Milwaukee, WI so you're not fighting race-morning closures and transit on tired legs. Arrive a day early to clear the expo and bib pickup, and build in buffer for gear-check and corral entry.
