Baystate Marathon

Baystate runs a tidy double-loop through Lowell on a nearly flat course built for hitting times. Cool October air and an honest course make it one of the more reliable setups for runners chasing a Boston qualifier.

Race Overview

EST. 1990

Baystate is the race people around Boston quietly point each other toward when they need a BQ and want a course that won't fight them. It starts and finishes in Lowell, runs two loops along the Merrimack River and through the surrounding neighborhoods, and stays almost completely flat the whole way. The October weather usually cooperates, with temperatures in the mid-40s to low 50s at the gun. That combination of flat course and cool air is exactly what you want when you are chasing a time. The field is focused. Most people here have a number in mind, and you'll feel that from the start.

The double-loop format is worth thinking about before race day. The first loop can feel deceptively easy, and the temptation is to bank time. Don't go with it. Run your goal pace and nothing faster, because the second loop has a way of collecting what the first loop lent you. Registration is open entry, but it fills steadily and was well past half-full months before race day, so sign up early if you're targeting this one. The price also goes up after July 1, which is a practical reason not to wait. If you need a Boston qualifier and want a race that gives you a genuine shot at it, Baystate is worth the trip.

Start and finish in one place

Baystate's double-loop course is nearly dead-flat, with a net drop of just four feet over the full distance. Total elevation gain sits around 500 feet, distributed in small, gradual rolls rather than any single punishing climb. The highest point is only 143 feet, and changes in grade are modest enough that you can run even splits without much drama. The multi-loop layout lets you pace the second loop against what you learned in the first. Winds can be a factor in exposed stretches along the Merrimack River, so monitor direction at the start and adjust effort rather than pace. Surface is mostly pavement. For PR or BQ attempts, the risk is going out too fast on what feels like a gift of a course. Be disciplined early.

What to expect

Mid-October in Lowell runs cool, and that gap between the low-30s at the gun and a high around 60 means you'll want throwaway layers for the corral. The start can feel cold enough to make you tense up, so resist the urge to go out fast just to warm down. By the later miles the day usually opens up into something comfortable, which sets this race up nicely for a controlled effort. Most years the conditions favor the clock.

What to expect

Most travelling runners fly into BOS, about 25 miles from the start, an easy transfer by rideshare or transit, roughly a 39-minute trip. Stay close to the start in Lowell, MA so you're not fighting race-morning closures and transit on tired legs. Arrive a day early to clear the expo and bib pickup, and build in buffer for gear-check and corral entry.
