Utah Valley Marathon

Utah Valley drops you out of the Wasatch foothills and carries you into Provo on a net-downhill point-to-point course built for fast times. The early start and canyon air keep conditions honest, but the altitude and a few real climbs mean you still have to race smart.

Race Overview

EST. 2008

Utah Valley starts up in the canyon above Provo and runs downhill into the city, which makes it one of the more PR-friendly setups you'll find on the race calendar. The first several miles drop through Provo Canyon with cool air and quiet roads, and it genuinely feels fast. That's the trap. Don't go with it. The net elevation loss is real, but so is the altitude at the start, and if you hammer the canyon descent you'll feel it by mile 18. The middle miles flatten out some and there are a handful of short climbs that sort out who paced well. The finish comes into Provo proper, and by then you've shed most of the elevation and the legs either have something left or they don't.

This is a hot-weather race in June, but the 6 AM start is your friend. You'll finish most of your miles before the day heats up. Wear a layer at the start because the canyon is cold at dawn, and plan to ditch it early. The field is a mix of Boston chasers and runners just looking for a fast day, and the course genuinely delivers for both if you run it right. Registration is open and straightforward with a cap around 2,000 runners, so you don't need to stress about a lottery. Just sign up and get your canyon legs ready.

Different start and finish

Utah Valley runs point-to-point from the Uinta National Forest down into Provo, losing roughly 1,440 feet over the course with about 780 feet of gain, for a net drop of around 660 feet. The early miles descend through Provo Canyon, which tempts you to bank time too aggressively. Resist. A few short climbs in the middle miles can catch runners who went out too hard on the descent. The final stretch into the city is where the grade flattens and you cash in whatever you saved. At a highest point above 6,100 feet, altitude is a factor, especially for runners traveling from sea level. Plan your pacing around the canyon descent, not off it.

What to expect

June in Utah Valley means a cold start and a warm finish. You'll likely be in layers at the gun, but shed them early because by the time you're in the lower miles the temperature can climb fast. That gap between morning and midday is the thing to plan around. The back half runs warmer, so hydrate from mile one and don't let the cool start lull you into skipping water stops. On a clear day the thin high-altitude air feels great early, but it dries you out faster than you'd expect.
