Race Overview

The Reno Marathon starts high. Really high. You're bussed to the Mt. Rose Highway summit before dawn, and when the gun goes off you're above 8,900 feet with cold air and a long road dropping away in front of you. The whole race is downhill, losing over 4,400 feet by the time you cross the finish line at the convention center in downtown Reno. That sounds like free speed, and it can be. But don't go with it early. The descent is real and relentless, and quads that feel fine at mile 8 will remind you of every reckless step by mile 20. Save something for the back half.

This is a REVEL-series race, so if you've run one of those you know the drill: big net drop, open registration, bussed start, a finish in a city center. It's genuinely PR-friendly for runners who respect the course and show up with their legs ready for sustained downhill pounding. The altitude at the start catches some people off guard too, especially if you're flying in from sea level, so arrive a day early if you can. Registration is open and straightforward through the REVEL site. The field is on the smaller side, which means no crowding and a relaxed corral experience. If you want a fast number and a low-key atmosphere, this one's worth the trip.

Different start and finish

This is a point-to-point course starting near 8,900 feet on the Mt. Rose Highway summit and descending roughly 4,460 feet into downtown Reno. The net loss is substantial and nearly continuous, which rewards runners who treat the early downhill miles with patience. Aggressive quad-burning descents in the first half can savage your legs by mile 18. The course runs predominantly on paved roads. Thin air at the start is a real factor, especially for runners arriving from sea level. If you pace conservatively through the high-elevation descent and let your legs settle, the lower miles open up and you have a genuine shot at a fast time.

What to expect

May in Reno means a cold start and a warm finish, and that spread matters. At the summit you're looking at a frosty, potentially windy morning, so bring a throwaway layer you don't mind leaving on the road by mile 3. As you descend into the valley, temperatures climb, and by the time you're in the later miles you could be running in the low-to-mid 70s. It's a dry heat, which helps, but if you've been coasting the downhill and not drinking, the warm back miles will find you out. Hydrate from mile one.
