Race Overview

EST. 2006

The Colfax Marathon starts and finishes at City Park, right in the middle of Denver. The multi-loop course takes you through city streets and parks, and the layout means you're never too far from support. It has a real neighborhood feel. But don't let the city setting fool you into thinking this is easy running. You're above a mile high the entire time, and the course rolls. If you're coming from sea level, plan for that. Give yourself at least a couple of days to adjust before race day, and don't go out at a pace you'd hit at lower elevation.

This is open registration, so getting in is straightforward. Sign up when registration opens in August, and go early if you want the lower price tier. It's a Boston qualifier, but the altitude and the course profile mean you'll need to run a solid race to hit your standard. A good chunk of the field is just there to finish, which gives it a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. If you're targeting a BQ, respect the conditions. If you're looking for a fun city marathon with easy logistics and a manageable field size, this is a good one to put on the calendar.

The course runs at high altitude, ranging from just above 5,100 to 5,500 feet throughout. With 600 feet of cumulative gain and no net drop to offset it, this is not a fast course on paper. The multi-loop layout means you revisit the same climbs, so pacing discipline early matters. Altitude alone can add minutes for runners not acclimatized, and the rolling profile keeps you from settling into a flat rhythm for long. Factor in extra effort from the elevation, target a conservative first half, and don't be surprised if your usual pace feels harder than the terrain suggests.

What to expect

May in Denver means a wide range in a single morning. The start can be genuinely cold, sometimes in the low 40s, so bring a throwaway layer for the corral. By the time you're in the later miles, temperatures can climb into the upper 60s, which combined with the altitude makes the back half feel harder than you'd expect. Wind is possible. Don't underdress because you're thinking about the finish line warmth, and stay on top of hydration from the early miles.
