Race Overview

EST. 2002

The Colorado Marathon runs from the mountains down through Poudre Canyon and finishes in downtown Fort Collins. It's a point-to-point course with a serious net drop, which means the first half feels like the trail is giving you something. It is, but you have to be careful with it. The canyon stretch is beautiful and fast-feeling, and it's easy to get carried away. Don't go with it. Banking that extra energy matters when the course flattens out in the city and your legs are suddenly asked to work without gravity's help.

This is a genuine PR course if you run it smart. The net elevation drop and open registration make it accessible, and it qualifies for Boston. You register through RunSignup, entries open in July, and it fills up, so don't sit on it too long. If standard spots sell out, there are charity entries at a higher price point. Fort Collins is a college town with a good downtown, easy to spend the weekend around. Get there early enough to sort logistics, since you'll be busing to the start. Worth the trip.

Different start and finish

This is a net-downhill point-to-point course, losing around 1,300 feet from start to finish with minimal compensating climb. The bulk of the descent comes through Poudre Canyon in the first half, where the grade is gradual enough to feel runnable but steep enough to punish anyone who goes out hard. Legs that are trashed from early canyon miles will struggle when the course flattens as it enters the city. The final miles are nearly flat. Start conservatively in the canyon, bank strength for the finish, and treat the downhill as an asset to manage rather than free speed to spend.

What to expect

May in Fort Collins means a cool-to-cold start and a mild finish. You'll probably be standing at the start in the canyon in the low 40s, so a throwaway layer is a smart call. By the time you're running through Fort Collins in the final miles, it can climb into the mid-60s. That swing is the thing to plan around. You won't feel overdressed at the gun, but you'll be glad you shed a layer early. Generally a good window for fast running, though afternoon warmth can sneak up on you if you're out there long.
