Race Overview

EST. 1972

The Avenue of the Giants runs through old-growth redwood forest in Humboldt County, and there really is nothing else like it. The trees are enormous and the canopy closes over the road so completely that it feels like running through a tunnel of bark and fog. It is quiet. Almost eerily quiet. That changes the whole feel of the race compared to anything you have done in a city.

The course is a multi-loop on paved road and it is nearly flat, which makes it a genuine shot at a fast time if you go in with a plan. The tricky part is the loop format: you will see the same stretch of road twice, and the second time through can mess with your head more than the grade ever will. Don't go out too hard chasing the flat early miles. The race is small and intimate, registration opens via RunSignup and typically sells out, so get in early if you want a spot. It is about five hours from San Francisco, so plan the logistics ahead of time. Worth the drive.

Start and finish in one place

The course runs a multi-loop layout through Humboldt Redwoods State Park on paved road beneath old-growth redwood canopy. Net elevation is essentially flat at 6 feet, and the total gain across the full marathon stays under 700 feet. The highest point barely clears 370 feet, so there are no meaningful climbs to budget for. What gain exists comes in gradual, rolling undulations rather than distinct hills. The tree canopy limits wind exposure significantly. The multi-loop design means you will see the same road twice, so mental preparation matters as much as physical pacing. Surface is consistent asphalt. This is a legitimate PR course for runners who execute even pacing.

What to expect

Early May in Humboldt County runs cool and often damp. You are under heavy forest canopy for most of the race, which keeps direct sun off you but also traps moisture. Expect a cold start in the low 40s and a high that rarely breaks the mid-50s. That sounds ideal, but the combination of cool air and humidity can make sweat management tricky. Bring a throwaway layer for the corral and plan to run in it longer than you think. Rain is possible. This is a weather window that favors fast running if you dress right.
