Race Overview

EST. 2002

Buffalo runs a multi-loop course through downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods, and the flat profile means you spend the whole race focused on effort rather than managing hills. The start and finish are both at the Convention Center, which keeps logistics simple and gives you a clean mental frame for each loop. The crowd thins in spots as you get further out, but coming back through the center has real energy. It is a course where you can actually execute a race plan if you run smart from the gun. Don't go out too fast on the first loop just because it feels easy.

This is a genuine PR course for runners who can hold steady effort over flat terrain. The weather in late May can swing, so be ready to adjust. It runs warm some years, and if the temperature climbs into the 70s by midday you will feel it. Hydrate from mile one and don't let a cool start fool you into skipping early aid stations. Entry is open registration until the race fills, so you can sign up without sweating a lottery. If you are chasing a Boston qualifier, the field here is competitive enough to race against, but the course gives you a fair shot.

The course spans a roughly 100-foot elevation band across its full length, making it one of the flatter options in the northeast. Net elevation is neutral, so there is no meaningful downhill gift to bank on, but there are no sustained climbs to dread either. The multi-loop layout means you cover similar terrain more than once, which helps with pacing and landmark recognition but can test mental focus late. Footing is road surface throughout. The modest elevation range suggests short, rolling grade changes rather than sharp pitches, so even pacing from the gun is realistic. Plan to run by feel on any mild rollers rather than blowing effort early.

What to expect

Late May in Buffalo tends to start cool and comfortable, but mornings can warm up faster than you expect once the sun is out. By the back half of the race, temperatures can be pushing into the low 70s, which is manageable but not nothing over 26 miles. Humidity is usually moderate. The multi-loop course means you won't get much shelter from the sun, so treat it like a warm-weather race even if the corral feels fine. Hydrate from mile one and don't wait until you feel warm to start paying attention.
