Race Overview

EST. 1984

The start and finish are both in Piazza del Duomo, right under Brunelleschi's dome, which tells you everything about the kind of race this is. The course is point-to-point in structure but loops back, so you end where you begin. Along the way you run through the historic center, cross the Arno, and pass through streets that are genuinely narrow in places. The crowd in the early miles is loud and close. It's a lot to take in, and it's easy to go out too fast. Don't.

This is not a flat race. There's real elevation gain spread across the course, so you'll feel it in the legs by mile 18 if you haven't been disciplined. It does qualify for Boston, which draws plenty of runners chasing a standard. Entry is open registration, so getting in is straightforward, but the field fills up, and registration closes in late November or sooner if it sells out. If you're planning this trip around a time goal, the late-November date is generally your friend, though Florence in late autumn can be cool and damp. Either way, it's worth every step through that city.

Different start and finish

Net elevation is flat at zero, but 800 feet of cumulative gain and loss means you are rarely on truly level ground for long. The course winds through the historic center, crossing the Arno River multiple times on cobblestone bridges and occasionally on stone-paved piazzas. Those surfaces slow turnover and fatigue legs faster than pavement does. The rolling character is spread across the whole course rather than concentrated in one big climb, so you cannot bank easy miles early and cash them in late. Treat it as an honest point-to-point with relentless small undulations. PR chasers need conservative early pacing and careful footing on the older surfaces.

What to expect

Late November in Florence means a cool start, often in the low-to-mid 40s, and a high that tops out in the mid-50s by the time the back half of the race rolls around. That is a good window for running. You will want throwaway layers at the start and a long-sleeve base, but you will warm up by mile four or five. Rain is possible this time of year, which matters more here than on a dry asphalt course because wet cobblestones get slick. Check the forecast the day before and adjust your footwear choice accordingly.
