Race Overview

EST. 1986

Venice Marathon starts in Stra, a quiet town on the Brenta Riviera about 25km west of Venice. The first 30km or so run along flat roads past Palladian villas, and if you've raced a lot of city marathons, the calm of that stretch will feel different. You can actually hear yourself breathe. Use those miles to settle in and save something, because the course earns its reputation in the final stretch.

Once you hit Venice proper, the course crosses a series of pedestrian bridges over the canals. They're short but steep, and there are enough of them to break your stride repeatedly. Don't try to surge through them. Take them steady and keep your footing, especially if it's been raining. Then you finish along the Grand Canal, which is the one moment that genuinely earns the hype. Entry is open registration, so getting in is straightforward. Just watch the fee tiers and register early to lock in the lower price.

Different start and finish

The course runs point-to-point from Stra westward into Venice over roughly 42km. Net elevation gain is modest, and the profile is mostly flat through the early Brenta Riviera stretch, which rewards patient early pacing. The challenge comes late: the final kilometers cross a series of narrow bridges with short, steep steps over Venice's canals. These crossings demand quick foot placement and break any rhythm you've built. Don't expect to negative-split the back half. Cobblestones and paved campsites also vary underfoot in the closing miles. The course is Boston-qualifying and genuinely fast through mile 20, but the bridge crossings mean a clean PR attempt requires practicing the footwork and banking time early.

What to expect

Late October in Venice runs cool and damp. You'll likely start in the mid-40s, which is comfortable for racing, but bring a throwaway layer for the corral because the wait can get cold. By the finish it may only be in the mid-50s, so you're racing in good conditions for most of the day. Rain is a real possibility, and wet cobblestones in the final Venice miles get slippery. Check the forecast the day before and plan your footwear accordingly.
