Istanbul Marathon

The Istanbul Marathon runs across the Bosphorus Bridge, crossing from Asia into Europe on foot. It is the only marathon in the world that spans two continents, and that alone makes it worth the trip.

Race Overview

EST. 1979

The Istanbul Marathon starts on the Asian side of the city and runs across the Bosphorus Bridge into Europe. That bridge crossing happens early, within the first few miles, and it is genuinely the moment people talk about. You are running between two continents on foot, with the strait below you and the Istanbul skyline ahead. Don't sprint it. The climb is real and the wind off the water can catch you off guard.

After the bridge you're into the European side, running through neighborhoods toward the finish near the city center. The course rolls. It is not a PR-friendly layout for most runners, with consistent elevation gain spread through the course and no long downhill section to recover on. That said, the qualification standard filters the field, so if you get in, you belong there. Registration is open but you'll need to show a recent result meeting the time standard, so sort that out early. If you're chasing a Boston qualifier, it is certified for that, just know you're racing a course that will ask something of you in the back half.

Different start and finish

This point-to-point course crosses from the Asian side to the European side via the Bosphorus Bridge in the opening miles, which brings an early climb before a descent into the city. With 800 feet of cumulative gain and no net elevation drop to offset it, the course is not flat. Expect rolling terrain through Istanbul's European neighborhoods in the middle and back half. The bridge climb demands discipline early; going out hard there will cost you later. Surface is primarily road with some exposed stretches on the bridge where wind off the Bosphorus can be a real factor. Plan for effort-based pacing rather than chasing splits.

What to expect

Early November in Istanbul is generally cool and manageable. The start temperature is usually in the low-to-mid 50s, and it warms only modestly through the race, so heavy layers aren't necessary but a throwaway top for the corral is worth it. The bigger variable is wind on the Bosphorus Bridge. Even on calm days the open span can funnel a real headwind, so don't let it pull you into fighting it early. Overall the conditions favor racing over surviving, but check the forecast in the final days.
