Why spring covers a huge range of weather risk

"Spring marathon" is doing a lot of work as a category. A race in March and a race in late May can share a latitude and differ by 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit on race day. That gap is the difference between a personal best and a survival march.

The research is consistent: for mid-pack runners, temperatures above 55°F start costing real minutes. Every few degrees above that threshold compounds the damage. You don't bonk from heat; you just fade, quietly, from mile 18 onward, wondering why your legs feel like sandbags.

The spring trade-off is real. Earlier races mean colder start lines, but your long runs peak in December and January, brutal training months depending on where you live. Later races mean gentler buildup weather, but the race-day temperature risk climbs fast. Neither extreme is obviously wrong. The question is which trade-off matches your situation.

Here's how to use this guide. Find the month that fits your training start date, then pick the fastest course in that window. The races below are scored on two axes: course speed (profile, net drop where we have it) and historical temperature band. If a race is fast but warm, that's said plainly. If it's cool but hilly, that's said too.

March: the cold-and-fast window

March races are underrated. The field is smaller, the registration is easier, and the weather is the most reliably cool you'll get in the spring calendar. The catch: your 18-week plan starts in November, your 20-week plan in October. You're doing long runs in the heart of winter. If you live somewhere cold, that's a real ask. If your winters are mild, this window is your best shot.

Virginia Beach in March is about as clean a weather proposition as spring offers. The Shamrock Marathon runs a flat, oceanfront course with an average race-day high of 57°F, right at the edge of the optimal window. It's not a big race (around 2,400 finishers), which means no crushing corrals and a genuine small-race atmosphere. The BQ rate of 5% is modest, but that reflects the broad field composition, not the course. The course earns fast times. Register early; it fills.

Napa is a point-to-point with 303 feet of net drop. That's measurable free speed, the kind that shows up in your finishing photo as a surprised grin. The BQ rate of 13% reflects it. The complication is temperature: the average race-day high sits at 66°F, which is warmer than ideal for a March race. On a cool year, Napa is exceptional. On a warm year, that downhill becomes your only insurance. It's a calculated bet, not a sure thing.

The Myrtle Beach Marathon is the Southeast's best early-spring flat option. Coastal South Carolina in March runs an average high of 62°F, warmer than Shamrock, cooler than it'll be by May. The course is flat, the field is manageable at about 1,200 finishers, and the 9% BQ rate is solid for a race that draws recreational runners too. If you're training out of the mid-Atlantic or Southeast and don't want a January long-run week in brutal cold, Myrtle is worth a hard look.

One honest caveat on March: if your winter training region gets real weather, ice, sub-zero wind chills, routine cancellations, factor that in. A 57°F race day doesn't compensate for three lost long runs in February.

April: the sweet spot

April is where the spring calendar gets interesting. A 16-week plan starts in December, a 20-week plan in November. You'll catch the tail end of winter for your early long runs, but your peak weeks land in March, manageable almost anywhere. And race-day temperatures, for the right races, are still in the fast zone. The BQ rates in this month are the highest of any spring window.

The data standout of spring. Eugene posts a 26% BQ rate, the highest of any race in this guide, on a mostly flat course with an average race-day high of 60°F. That combination is rare. Eugene is Track Town, USA; the culture takes fast running seriously, the course support is legitimate, and the field of 4,500 is large enough to find a pack but small enough to race cleanly. Net drop is unverified in our catalog, so don't count on gravity, but the flat profile and cool temps do the work. If one race in this guide earns the word "fast" without qualification, it's this one.

Toledo is the most underrated race in this entire post. A 25% BQ rate, a mostly flat course, a manageable field of 1,200, and a 62°F average high. Those numbers belong in the same conversation as Eugene. The difference is obscurity, nobody outside the Midwest talks about Glass City, which means easier registration and less congestion on course. If you want a quiet, serious, fast April race, this is it.

Cary, North Carolina gives Southeast runners an April option that's actually flat. The course runs mostly on a former railroad corridor, genuinely level, no meaningful grade changes, and the 64°F average high is warm but still workable with a cool morning start. The 13% BQ rate and 546-runner field make it a legitimate regional choice, not just a fallback.

Carmel, Indiana deserves mention and a warning in the same breath. The BQ rate is 21% and the course is mostly flat. But the average race-day high is 80°F. That is not a typo. April in central Indiana can produce genuinely hot race days, and when it does, that 21% figure becomes aspirational. Carmel rewards the runner who checks the 10-day forecast and has a contingency plan. On a cool year, it's a serious BQ course. On a warm year, back off and bank fitness for the fall.

May: the biggest races, the biggest gamble

May races attract big fields and give you the most forgiving training buildup of the spring season. The trade-off: you're racing into warming temperatures. Average highs in the 68 to 74°F range aren't catastrophic, but they demand a strategy. The rule for May is simple: look for water. Lake-adjacent and coastal courses buffer heat better than inland alternatives. Every race below earns its spot by sitting near a significant body of water.

Bayshore runs along Grand Traverse Bay in Traverse City, Michigan, flat, scenic, and genuinely fast for late May. The average high is 69°F, but the bay keeps morning temperatures cooler than that figure suggests. The 19% BQ rate on a 2,000-person field is strong for May. This is the classic late-spring BQ race, and its reputation is earned. Register early; it fills steadily.

Ventura, California at the end of May reads warm on paper, 68°F average high, but ocean influence does real work here. The course runs point-to-point toward the coast, and the marine layer that characterizes coastal Southern California in late spring keeps actual race-morning conditions meaningfully cooler than inland alternatives. The 22% BQ rate on a 1,755-runner field is the highest of any May race in this guide. Net drop is unverified in our catalog, but the point-to-point routing toward sea level suggests a favorable profile. This is the May race to prioritize.

Ottawa is a legitimate flat course with a 4,780-runner field and solid organization. The concern is temperature: 74°F average high puts it at the warm edge of the workable range. Morning start temperatures will be more forgiving, but Ottawa carries more weather variance than Bayshore or Mountains 2 Beach. It's a fine race on a cool year. It's a rough day on a warm one. Factor that variance into your decision.

June: one real option

Most June marathons are too warm to recommend for a serious PR attempt. Inland courses in June are simply asking too much of the weather. One race is the exception.

Duluth, Minnesota in June benefits from Lake Superior in a way that makes the 70°F average high misleading. The lake is enormous and cold; it drags temperatures down along the course's point-to-point routing from Two Harbors to Canal Park. The 14% BQ rate on a 7,500-runner field confirms the course produces real times. This is not a charity recommendation, it's a race that has earned its reputation by genuinely being cooler than June has any right to be. That said, 70°F is still 70°F. A warm year removes the margin. And Grandma's sells out early, so if this is your target, register the day it opens.

If you missed every earlier window and you're committed to a spring race, Grandma's is your answer. If you have any flexibility, consider whether a fall race might serve you better.

How to pick your race: a 3-question filter

Three questions cut through the noise.

  • 01Q1: When can you start a 16-20 week training block? Work backward. If you can start in October or November, April is your target month. If December is the earliest you can commit, look at late April or May. If you're starting now (or delayed), Grandma's in June is your last real option.
  • 02Q2: Is your priority a BQ or an outright PR? For BQ rate, Eugene (26%) and Toledo Glass City (25%) lead the field. For an outright PR on a faster course profile, Napa's 303-foot net drop and Mountains 2 Beach's coastal routing deserve weight even if their BQ rates are more modest.
  • 03Q3: How much weather variance can you absorb? If you need a near-guarantee of cool conditions, Shamrock and Eugene are your safest bets. If you can handle some risk, Carmel's upside on a cool day is real. If you're gambling on May or June, go water-adjacent or don't go at all.

The spring vs. fall question

Spring has one genuine structural advantage: you're arriving at the start line fresh off a full winter training block, before summer heat has had a chance to degrade your aerobic base. Fall runners often carry accumulated fatigue from a summer that didn't go as planned.
