Race Overview

EST. 1977

Grandma's Marathon starts north of Duluth in Two Harbors and runs south along the North Shore on Scenic Highway 61, with Lake Superior stretching out to your left for most of the race. The first 10 miles trend gently downhill, which feels great early on. Don't go with it too hard. The course stays in the 600-650 ft elevation range through the middle miles, rolling but never brutal, until Lemon Drop Hill shows up just before mile 22. It's not a monster, but it comes late when your legs are already working. After that, you drop into the city and the crowd volume picks up noticeably as you pass through downtown Duluth and into Canal Park for the finish. The last few miles with people lined up along London Road are the moment everyone warns you about, in the best way.

This is a genuinely fast course for most runners. The net downhill and frequent tailwind off the lake give you every advantage the course can offer. The biggest risk is the early miles feeling easier than they are, and then paying for it after mile 20. Register on October 1 when it opens at 7 p.m. CT, and be ready, because it sells out fast. If you miss it, charity partner entries are available but require fundraising commitments. Book your hotel the moment you register. Duluth fills up completely for race weekend and prices climb quickly.

Different start and finish

Grandma's Marathon runs point-to-point from Two Harbors to Duluth's Canal Park along Scenic Highway 61, hugging Lake Superior for most of the route. The first 10 miles trend mostly downhill, dropping from 740 ft at the start to around 620 ft, with short rolling climbs at miles 4, 7, and 8-9. Miles 10-20 flatten and roll across the 600-640 ft range. The course's most notable challenge is Lemon Drop Hill near mile 22, a short but meaningful climb after long cumulative fatigue. Total cumulative gain is roughly 162 ft against 292 ft of loss, yielding a net 130 ft drop. The course's early downhill tempts over-extension; disciplined early pacing is critical. The road surface is paved throughout, with minimal turns until entering Duluth's city streets around mile 18, where crowd support picks up significantly.

What to expect

June in Duluth can go a few different ways, and that's the honest truth. A cool morning in the low 50s is common at the start, which feels great early, but the afternoon sun along Lake Superior can push temps into the low 70s by the time you're in the late miles. It's manageable, but it's not a guaranteed cool day. The lake can also kick up a headwind on the back half of the course, which catches people off guard. Hydrate from mile one and don't bank on the weather doing you any favors.

Entry

LOTTERY

Grandma's moved to a lottery in 2022 after years of selling out within minutes. The drawing runs in October the prior year; lottery odds have been about 1 in 2. A small allotment of guaranteed-entry slots goes to time qualifiers, charity partners, and 'Streaker' multi-year finishers.

What to expect

Most travelling runners fly into DLH, about 10 miles from the start, right on the doorstep by rideshare or transit, roughly a 16-minute trip. Stay close to the start in Duluth, MN so you're not fighting race-morning closures and transit on tired legs. Arrive a day early to clear the expo and bib pickup, and build in buffer for gear-check and corral entry.
