Grandma's Marathon
A storied point-to-point run along the cold shore of Lake Superior, Grandma's rewards disciplined pacers with genuine PR conditions and punishes those who get greedy on the early descents before Lemon Drop Hill.

Race-day weather.
Mid-June along Lake Superior is moderated by the cold water: start-line temperatures are typically in the low 50s, with finish-line highs near 70°F. Lake-effect fog at the Two Harbors start is common. Years with offshore wind shift the cool air away and produce some of the warmer editions.
Entry.
Grandma's moved to a lottery in 2022 after years of selling out within minutes. The drawing runs in October the prior year; lottery odds have been about 1 in 2. A small allotment of guaranteed-entry slots goes to time qualifiers, charity partners, and 'Streaker' multi-year finishers.

Race history.
Founded in 1977 by Scott Keenan and a group of Duluth runners, named after a downtown saloon that was the only local business willing to be a sponsor. The 2026 edition is the 50th running. The course has produced the American 50-and-over marathon record and several Olympic Trials qualifying performances.
First run in 1977. Roughly 7,500 finishers in a recent edition.
