Race Overview

EST. 1975

Ottawa runs right through the middle of the capital, which means you get parliament buildings, the Rideau Canal, and wide open roads that feel genuinely fast. The course is multi-loop and almost completely flat, so there's nothing tricky about the terrain. What you do get is a well-run race with good crowd support in the core of the city. It's a solid setup if you're chasing a time.

The flat profile is a double-edged thing. There's no hill to blame if you go out too hard, and on the second loop you'll feel it if you weren't honest with yourself early. Don't chase the first half. The late-May timing usually gives you decent conditions, though Ottawa can surprise you with warmth, so check the forecast the week before and plan your hydration accordingly. Getting in is easy enough, registration is open and fills on a rolling basis, so don't sit on it too long. If a BQ is the goal, this course gives you a real shot.

Start and finish in one place

The course is a multi-loop design with minimal elevation change, sitting within roughly a 90-foot band from lowest to highest point. Net elevation is effectively flat, which keeps pacing straightforward from the gun. The absence of significant climbing or descent means there are no recovery stretches built into the terrain, so early discipline matters. Runners should treat the second loop as a focus point: fatigue compounds on familiar ground, and the flat profile can encourage banking time too aggressively in the first half. Surface and exposure details favor consistent splits for most of the course. For a PR attempt, even effort from the start is the safest plan.

What to expect

Late May in Ottawa can go a few ways. Mornings are usually comfortable, cool enough that a throwaway layer at the start is worth considering. But by the back half of the race, temperatures can climb into the low-to-mid 70s and that gap between start and finish is where people get into trouble. Humidity is moderate but not oppressive. Plan to hydrate from mile one rather than waiting until you feel it.
