Race Overview

EST. 1982

Wineglass starts in Bath and runs east to Corning through the Southern Tier of upstate New York. The course follows rural roads in the early miles, quiet and tree-lined, before picking up the river corridor and heading into town. There are no big climbs to manage. The rolling sections come in the first half, then the course settles into a flat, runnable stretch that lets you find a rhythm and hold it. The finish in downtown Corning is the moment that earns it, compact and loud for a race this size, with a decent crowd gathered on Market Street.

This is a legitimate PR course. The net downhill helps, and the flat back half rewards anyone who goes out patient. Don't bank miles in the first 10. The field is manageable, the organization is tight, and the shuttle from the start line is well run, so logistics are low-stress. Registration opens in December and sells out, so get in early if you want a spot. There is no lottery, just open registration on a first-come basis. If you are chasing a Boston qualifier and want a course that gives you a fair shot, this is a smart choice.

Different start and finish

Wineglass runs point-to-point from Bath to Corning with a net downhill profile. The first half trends gently downward, giving you momentum early, but be careful not to bank too much speed before the course flattens out in the middle miles. The modest elevation gain is spread across small rolling sections rather than one sustained climb, so there is no single wall to fear. The back half is largely flat along the Chemung River corridor, which rewards runners who held back early. Net loss exceeds gain, making this genuinely PR-friendly on a well-paced effort. Road surface is paved throughout, and the course is USATF certified.

What to expect

October in Corning means a cold start and a comfortable mid-morning. You will likely be in the low 40s at the gun in Bath, so dress in throwaway layers you can shed in the first few miles. By the finish the temperature has usually climbed into the low 60s, which is about as good as marathon weather gets. Wind can be a factor on the exposed river sections in the back half, but most years this is a racing-weather day rather than a survival day. Plan for the cold start, and you should be fine.
