Race Overview

EST. 2001

The Mickelson Trail Marathon is a quiet one. You start near Rochford in the Black Hills, on a converted rail trail at over 6,000 feet, and run south toward Deadwood on crushed limestone the whole way. There are no city blocks, no crowds lining the course, no roaring intersections. Just pines, open meadows, and a trail that trends gently downhill for most of the morning. The net drop is real and it does help, but the altitude at the start will catch you if you go out too fast. Don't go with it in those first few miles.

This is a small race, and that's actually one of its best qualities. You get space on the trail, you know your neighbors by mile three, and the logistics are tighter because of it. Shuttles take you out to the start from Deadwood, so sort that out the night before. Weather in early June can swing, and you'll be exposed on some sections, so pack a layer for the corral and sunscreen for the back half. It's a certified Boston qualifier, and the net downhill makes it genuinely worth chasing a time here, but the altitude keeps it honest. Entry is open registration with tiered pricing, so signing up early saves you money and locks your spot before the cap fills.

Different start and finish

The course runs point-to-point on the Mickelson Trail, a converted rail bed that keeps grades gentle throughout. Starting near Rochford at around 6,200 feet, it loses roughly 1,950 feet over the full distance while gaining about 1,160, for a net drop close to 800 feet. The descending bias favors negative-split pacing, but altitude is a genuine factor at the start. Runners not acclimatized should resist going out hard in the first few miles. The trail surface is crushed limestone, firm and runnable but not pavement. Exposure to sun and wind is real across the open stretches, particularly in the second half.

What to expect

Early June in the Black Hills means a cool morning at the start and a warmer finish. You'll likely be glad for a throwaway layer in the corral at altitude, but by the time you hit the exposed middle miles the sun is up and working. Wind can pick up across the open sections. It's not a guaranteed fast-weather day, but it's usually manageable if you don't start overheated. Sunscreen from mile one is worth it.
