Race Overview

EST. 2002

Memphis in December is cold, often in the upper 30s at the gun, and the course keeps you working the whole way. It is a multi-loop layout, so you will see the same stretches twice. That sounds like it should be boring, but it actually helps. You know what is coming, you can pace against the terrain, and the crowds are in the same spots both times around. The race is built around St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and that presence is real. You will see the families and the patients on the course. It hits you. Most people run harder than they planned because of it.

This is not a PR-friendly course in the classic sense. The cumulative rolling elevation adds up, and early December in Memphis can throw warm, rainy, or cold mornings at you in the same year. Go out easy on loop one. Seriously, don't go with the crowd energy off the start. The back half is where the course asks the most of you, and you want something left. Getting in is straightforward, open registration with no lottery, and you can sign up as a general participant or commit to fundraising as a St. Jude Hero. Either way, the race will ask more of you than the logistics suggest.

Start and finish in one place

The course is a multi-loop layout with roughly 700 feet of cumulative gain and a net elevation difference of the same, meaning what goes up does not come back down on balance. The spread between the lowest and highest points is modest, around 87 feet, but the repeated rolling adds up across the full 26.2. Expect no single dramatic climb, but also no long downhill to bank time. The multi-loop format means you cover familiar ground more than once, which can help with pacing and crowd support but can also drain motivation late. Plan conservatively in the first loop, treat the second as the real race, and bank nothing on easy downhills early.

What to expect

Early December in Memphis means a cold start, often in the upper 30s, and you'll want throwaway layers for the corral. You'll warm into it as the miles go on, with midday temps usually settling in the low-to-mid 50s. That's a genuinely good window for running fast, as long as you dress for the gun rather than mile 20. Wind can be a factor on exposed stretches, so check the forecast the day before and plan accordingly.

Entry

OPEN

Registration offers two pathways: St. Jude Heroes with fundraising commitment (Bronze through Elite levels, April 1-June 2) and General registration without mandatory fundraising (June 3 until sold out). What to expect

Most travelling runners fly into LIT, about 127 miles from the start, a longer haul by rideshare or transit, roughly a 201-minute trip. Stay close to the start in Memphis, TN so you're not fighting race-morning closures and transit on tired legs. Arrive a day early to clear the expo and bib pickup, and build in buffer for gear-check and corral entry.
