Race Overview

EST. 1994

Disney World Marathon is one of those races that sounds gimmicky until you're actually running through Cinderella Castle at 5 a.m. with the park completely to yourself. The course runs through all four parks, Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom, looping back and forth across resort roads in between. It's flat, and the Florida January morning is usually cool enough to feel good. But don't let the festive atmosphere trick you into going out too fast. The entertainment and photo stops are everywhere, and if you're chasing a time, you have to be deliberate about ignoring them.

The course itself is nearly pancake flat, so it's friendly for a strong effort if you stay disciplined. The challenge is mental focus, not elevation. Crowd support is thinner on the resort connector roads, which is most of the course, so don't expect the crowd to carry your pace. The race is open registration and fills fast, sometimes within days of opening, so set a reminder when registration goes live. runDisney club members get early access, which is worth knowing if you plan to run this more than once. If you're bringing family, the theme park setting makes the whole weekend easy to sell. That part, honestly, is the real draw.

Start and finish in one place

With only 260 feet of total gain and a net elevation of nearly zero, this is as flat as Florida gets. The course runs through four theme parks, which means frequent turns, narrow queuing-area stretches, and surfaces that shift between pavement and brick-paved walkways. The turns and surface changes matter more than any climb. Expect to slow through park interiors and use the wider resort roads between them to settle your pace. Cool January mornings help, but temperatures rise steadily toward midday for later runners. The back half offers no significant downhill relief, so treat this as a flat effort rather than a fast one. A PR is possible but the course design works against a clean time.

What to expect

January in Orlando means a wide swing from gun to finish. The morning start can feel genuinely cold, so wear a throwaway layer in the corral and don't be surprised if you're shivering before the fireworks go off. By the back half of the race, temperatures climb into the low 70s, which sounds pleasant but can catch you off guard if you dressed for the cold start. It's Florida, so humidity is always in the mix. Hydrate from mile one, even if you don't feel like you need to.
