Singapore Marathon

The Singapore Marathon sends you through one of Southeast Asia's most densely lit cityscapes, from the F1 Pit Building to the National Stadium, on a course that demands respect for the heat as much as the distance.

Race Overview

EST. 1982

Singapore runs at night, and that matters. The race starts after dark to dodge the worst of the daytime heat, which means you get the city lit up across the water at Marina Bay, the skyline reflecting off the reservoir, and roads that look different at 4am than they do in a travel photo. It's a cool visual. It is not, however, a cool race. The humidity sits heavy regardless of the hour, and you will feel it by mile ten if you go out too fast. Don't go out too fast.

This is a point-to-point course with real elevation gain spread across rolling terrain and bridge crossings. It's not flat, and the conditions mean you should treat your goal pace with some skepticism before race day. It is a Boston qualifier, so that math is doable, but come with a heat plan and not just a time plan. Getting in is straightforward: registration is open on a first-come, first-served basis starting in late April, closes at the end of September or when capacity fills, and there's no lottery to sweat. If you want a marathon that puts you somewhere genuinely different, this is a good answer.

Different start and finish

The course runs point to point from the F1 Pit Building to the National Stadium, accumulating around 705 feet of gain with no meaningful net drop to compensate. Expect rolling terrain rather than a flat, fast track. Climbs are spread through the course rather than concentrated in one brutal stretch, but the cumulative elevation in tropical heat multiplies their effect. There are no significant downhill sections to recover pace. Turns through city streets and bridges add brief interruptions to rhythm. With minimal shade on exposed sections and humidity throughout, this is a course where effort-based pacing beats target splits. Don't chase the early miles.

What to expect

Race day in early December sits in the mid-70s at the gun and climbs through the 80s as the hours pass. The humidity is the real factor, not just the temperature. Even starting after dark, the air is thick, and sweat stops cooling you the way it does in a drier climate. Your pace will feel harder than your effort suggests. Hydrate from mile one, not when you're thirsty. This isn't a PR-friendly window for most runners, so if you're chasing a time, build your strategy around effort and conditions rather than splits.
