Race Overview

EST. 2018

REVEL Mt Hood is a downhill specialist's course. You start up near Timberline Lodge on the slopes of Mt Hood and run essentially downhill the whole way to the finish. The elevation drops nearly a mile over 26.2 miles, which sounds like free speed, and for a well-prepared runner it genuinely can be.

The catch is that sustained descent is hard on the legs in a specific way. Your quads take a beating that flat racing doesn't prepare you for. If you haven't trained downhill, the back half will remind you. Go out controlled in the first ten miles even when it feels easy. That's the one thing worth repeating: don't let the grade talk you into a pace you haven't earned. Entry is open registration, so getting in is straightforward. Note that the race has had a cancellation in its recent history, so check current editions before you plan your season around it.

Different start and finish

The course starts near Timberline Lodge at roughly 5,600 feet and drops almost continuously to the finish near Portland, shedding close to 4,750 feet net. The steepest descent comes in the first half as the route falls off the mountain, so quad fatigue is a real factor by mile 18 if you go out hard. The back half flattens somewhat but offers little recovery if your legs are already cooked. Point-to-point layout means no repeated segments. The sustained downhill favors aggressive but controlled pacing early. Hold back in the first ten miles or the final 10K will cost you everything you banked.

What to expect

Late June in the Mt Hood corridor means a cool start up near the lodge, likely in the 40s, and warming conditions as you descend toward Portland. By the time you're in the lower miles the temperature can climb into the high 60s. It's usually manageable, but the warming trend catches some runners off guard in the back half. Wear a throwaway layer at the start and plan to hydrate steadily once you drop into the valley.
