Race Overview

EST. 1999

Newport is a small, focused race on the Oregon coast that quietly delivers for runners chasing a qualifying time. The course is an out-and-back on flat, paved roads, hugging the coastline. Temperatures on race day are usually in the low-to-mid 50s, which is about as good as marathon weather gets. The field is small and the atmosphere is low-key, nothing like a big-city event, but that suits most people who come here just fine.

Because the course is so flat and the conditions so reliable, this is genuinely a good place to go after a goal time. The only thing to watch is the coastal wind. Go out easy on the way out, especially if there is a tailwind, because you will feel it on the return. Registration opens in the fall and has sold out well before spring in past years, so get in early. It fills before most people start thinking about their race calendar.

The course is nearly flat, topping out under 120 feet above sea level with minimal cumulative gain. The slight net drop of 70 feet runs in your favor, but the out-and-back layout means any tailwind on the way out becomes a headwind on the return. The coast can funnel wind, so factor that into pacing early. There are no significant climbs to manage. The low elevation ceiling and paved surface make this a course where even splits are achievable. Go out conservatively; the back half offers no terrain relief if you have gone too hard.

What to expect

Late May on the Oregon coast means cool and often overcast conditions. You'll probably start in the high 40s and finish somewhere in the mid-to-upper 50s, which sounds ideal until you factor in the wind off the Pacific. That coastal breeze can make it feel colder than it is, especially on the exposed stretches. Bring a throwaway layer for the corral. The good news is it rarely gets warm enough to slow you down, so if you dress right, the conditions generally favor a solid effort.
