Race Overview

EST. 2002

Ogden starts high in the mountains and runs a canyon road all the way down into downtown. The first several miles feel almost effortless, with the descent doing a lot of the work. That is exactly where you have to be careful. Don't let the early miles fool you into banking time you'll spend painfully in the back half. Train your quads for downhill running before you show up.

The course flattens out in the second half, and that's where the race gets honest. You'll feel the canyon miles in your legs right when the grade levels off. It's still a genuinely fast course on a good day, and the BQ rate reflects that. Registration is open and fills on a rolling basis, with prices increasing as it sells out, so don't wait too long. Charity spots are available if the full is gone. Get in early, run the downhills controlled, and you've got a real shot at something fast.

Different start and finish

Ogden is a net-downhill point-to-point course, losing around 1,500 feet from a mountain start near 5,400 feet to the downtown finish at roughly 4,300 feet. The first half benefits from sustained descent through the canyon, where gravity does real work. The gain of 374 feet is spread through rolling sections in the second half as the course flattens toward downtown. The pacing risk here is the early downhill: it feels easy, and your legs will pay for it in miles 18 to 26 if you go out too hard. Quads take a beating on sustained descents, so train for it. The course is USATF certified and Boston-qualifying.

What to expect

Mid-May in Ogden means a cold start up in the mountains and a warmer finish in town. The gun goes off in cool air, probably in the low-to-mid 40s, so dress in layers you're willing to toss. By the time you hit the lower miles and approach downtown, it can be pushing into the 60s or low 70s. It's not a brutal heat day, but the warming trend is real and worth accounting for. Don't overdress for the finish.
