Race Overview

EST. 2004

Salt Lake City is a point-to-point course that starts up in the foothills and runs down into the city. The early miles have some honest climbing, and if you go out too aggressively chasing the downhill you will pay for it later. Be patient. The middle section of the course is where the descent really opens up, and if you have saved yourself you can move well through miles 15 to 20. The finish comes into downtown, which is a good place to leave everything you have left.

This is a legitimately fast course on a good day, but the altitude is real. If you are coming from sea level, give yourself a couple of days to adjust. The field is mid-sized, registration is open, and you can sign up late if you need to. It is not a lottery, not a qualifier to enter, just pay and run. The free TRAX light rail gets you to the start, which makes race morning a lot less stressful. If you want a PR-friendly course without the chaos of a massive race, this is a solid call.

Different start and finish

The course runs point-to-point with a net drop of roughly 584 feet, but the gain is real and front-loaded. Expect the first several miles to include meaningful climbing before the course tips downhill through the middle stretch. The back half trends descending into downtown, which is where you bank time. The catch: arriving at those late-mile downhills on tired legs from the early climbing can shred quads if you go out hard. Be patient in the first quarter, let the descents come to you, and you will have legs to use them. Road surface throughout, USATF certified, with the high point around 4,872 feet, so altitude is a factor worth respecting if you are not acclimated.

What to expect

April in Salt Lake City means a cold start. Morning temperatures can sit in the low 30s at gun time, so dress in throwaway layers you are willing to leave on the road. By the time you reach the finish, it is often warming into the low 50s, which is actually pretty good running weather. The dry mountain air helps, but the swing from start to finish is big enough that you will feel overdressed by mile 10 if you are not careful. Plan for the cold at the gun and trust that you will warm up fast once the climbing starts.
