Race Overview

EST. 2014

The Zydeco Marathon runs through Lafayette, Louisiana, and flat is almost an understatement. The course barely moves up or down from start to finish. If you have a time goal, the terrain is not going to be what stops you. It is a multi-loop setup, which takes some getting used to, but it also means the course is simple to navigate and you always know where you are. The crowd is small but genuinely warm, and the post-race food and music are the real deal. This is Cajun country, and they treat race day like a celebration.

For your goals, this is one of the flatter courses you will find anywhere, so it is a reasonable spot to chase a PR or a Boston qualifier. Just know that multi-loop courses can feel long mentally in the back half, so keep the effort honest early. Don't let a fast first loop pull you out in front of your fitness. Registration is open and straightforward, and the field is small enough that you get a low-key, personal race-day feel. If you want a big-city spectacle, this is not it. But if you want a well-organized flat race with a genuine Louisiana party at the finish, it is worth making the trip.

Start and finish in one place

The Zydeco Marathon uses a multi-loop course in Lafayette with virtually no elevation change. The highest point sits just over 40 feet and the lowest around 15, making the net profile as flat as it gets. For PR chasers, that means no energy spent climbing, but multi-loop courses demand mental discipline: avoid banking early excitement and treat each loop with the same patience. Surface and turn frequency are worth previewing at the expo, as tighter loops can break rhythm late. With consistent flat running from start to finish, pacing strategy matters more than terrain management here.

What to expect

March in Lafayette usually means a cool morning and a warmer second half of the race. You might start the gun feeling comfortable, even a little chilly, but by the time you are deep into the back half the temperature climbs and the humidity creeps in. South Louisiana in spring is rarely dry. Hydrate from mile one and don't count on the cool start to last. It is not a brutal weather day on average, but it is not a guaranteed fast-conditions day either. Respect the humidity.
