Race Overview

EST. 1989

The Bataan Memorial Death March isn't a race in the usual sense. It's a tribute march set on White Sands Missile Range in the New Mexico desert, honoring soldiers who endured the 1942 Bataan Death March. You'll feel that weight on the course, and it's intentional.

The terrain is desert: unpaved roads, sandy stretches, and over 3,000 feet of climbing across the full loop. The high point comes before midway, so the back half isn't flat relief, it's a long grinding return over sand that pulls at your legs. The morning start is cold, often in the 30s, but by midday the temperature can push into the 70s. Dress in layers you can shed. If you're doing the heavy category with a 35-plus pound pack, be conservative from the gun, the weight costs you more than you expect on the climbs. Registration is open to everyone, including individuals and teams of five, and the 12-hour limit is generous enough that finishing is within reach for hikers and walkers. But don't underestimate it. The course earns its reputation.

The course is a loop on White Sands Missile Range with over 3,100 feet of gain against roughly 1,900 feet of loss, leaving a net climb of more than 1,200 feet. Expect the first half to trend upward toward the 5,400-foot high point, with the descent concentrated in the back half. The desert terrain includes sandy trails and unpaved roads that slow footing and drain the legs faster than road surface. With limited shade and exposed miles throughout, heat and wind become a factor once the sun climbs. Heavy-category participants carry a 35-plus pound pack, which compounds every climb. Pacing conservatively early and saving energy for the sandy return stretches is essential.

What to expect

March in the New Mexico desert means a cold start and a warm finish. Early morning temperatures can sit in the upper 30s at the gun, so you'll want a throwaway layer for the corral. By midday it can reach the low 70s, and with limited shade on the course, that swing matters. It's usually dry, but the desert sun and wind pull moisture out of you fast. Hydrate from the start, not when you feel it.
