Race Overview

EST. 1975

Tallahassee is one of the hillier marathons in Florida, and that surprises people who assume the whole state is flat. It starts at the Leon County Courthouse in downtown and runs a multi-loop course through the city's rolling terrain. The hills are real. You'll notice them on the first loop, and you'll notice them more on the second. Don't go out chasing a big first half.

This is a small race, which means a quiet, low-fuss atmosphere. No massive corrals, no overwhelming expo. You show up, you run, and the course does its thing. It's a Boston qualifier, but the hills mean you have to earn it. Registration is open entry through RunSignup, and with limited capacity it fills up, so getting in early is worth doing. If you want a tune-up race with a bit of bite, or you're chasing a BQ in a low-key setting, this one is worth a look. Just respect the course on loop one.

The multi-loop layout means you face the same climbs more than once, so course knowledge helps. With 662 feet of gain across the race and a net drop of 148 feet, this is not a flat Florida course. The terrain rolls through Tallahassee's hills, which are unusually pronounced for the region. The early miles let you settle in, but the repeating loop structure means tired legs hit familiar uphills late. Plan your effort conservatively on the first pass. The net loss is modest enough that it won't carry you to a PR on its own. Surface is mostly road. Exposure can be a factor on open stretches if wind picks up.

What to expect

February in Tallahassee can feel more like late fall than winter. Expect a cold start, often in the low 40s, so throwaway layers at the line are a good call. By the later miles you'll have warmed up and the air usually climbs into the mid-60s. That's comfortable for spectating but can feel warm once you're working hard. The back half of the race is the part to watch on warmer days. It's generally a decent window for fast running, but it's not a sure thing.
