Race Overview

EST. 1979

Stockholm Marathon runs two loops around the Swedish capital and finishes on the track inside the old Olympic Stadium. The city looks good in late May. The waterways, bridges, and open squares give you something to look at both times around, which matters more than you'd think when you're retracing ground in the second half. The stadium finish is genuinely something. You run in through the tunnel and onto the track with the crowd close on all sides. Worth the effort to get there.

The course is mostly flat with some rolling stretches spread across both laps. That means no single hill will break you, but the cumulative gain adds up, and the second loop is where a lot of runners pay for going out too fast. Be patient in the first lap. Registration opens in August each year and closes when the spots are gone, so mark the date and set a reminder. Entry is straightforward, just don't sleep on it.

The course is a two-loop design, nearly dead-flat on net elevation with roughly 684 feet of cumulative gain spread across both loops. The highest point is only about 118 feet above sea level, so no single climb will hurt you badly, but the repeated rollers across two laps can accumulate fatigue if you go out hard. Pacing the first loop conservatively is the main tactical call here. The finish inside Stockholm Olympic Stadium gives you a lap on the track, which tends to feel fast at the end. Surface is primarily road. Expect some turns negotiating city streets, so avoid wide early lines.

What to expect

Late May in Stockholm is generally mild, but you're racing at high latitude and the weather can surprise you. Expect a cool-to-comfortable morning at the gun, usually in the low 50s, warming into the mid-60s by the time the back half of the race arrives. That's a reasonable window for fast running if you dress smart. A light throwaway layer for the start is worth it. Wind can be a factor near the water, so don't count on a calm day. Overall it's a decent weather bet, but check the forecast race week.
