Race Overview

EST. 2005

The Geneva Marathon runs a loop around the city and along Lac Léman, starting and finishing near the Jet d'Eau fountain on the lakeshore. The first half takes you out along the lake with the water close on one side and Geneva's neighbourhoods on the other. It's a course that feels fast early, with the flat lakeside stretches encouraging a brisk pace. Don't go with it too hard in those opening miles. The second half brings you back through the city, with some rolling sections that add up if you haven't been patient. The net elevation is zero, but there's enough gain and loss across the loop to make the back half feel more honest than the first.

This is a genuine Boston qualifier, and the open registration makes it easy to plan around. You can sign up as late as race week, which is unusual and genuinely convenient if your spring schedule is uncertain. Field sizes are modest, so you actually have room to run your own race from the gun. The city is compact, Geneva Airport is minutes from the center, and the lakeside finish is worth the effort to get there. If you're chasing a qualifier time, the course gives you a fair shot. Just save something for the second half of that loop.

The Geneva Marathon is a loop with equal gain and loss, so what goes up must come down. Total climb is just under 1,000 feet spread over 26.2 miles, with a range of roughly 380 feet between the lowest and highest points. That spread means you will feel the rises, but no single climb is brutal. The course rewards patience early: if the first half pulls you along with some downhill momentum, resist it. The back half can bite. Expect a mix of lakeside flats and rolling stretches rather than a pure PR-friendly flat course. Pacing conservatively through any climbing sections will pay off late.

What to expect

May in Geneva can feel ideal or surprisingly warm depending on the day. Mornings at the gun are usually cool and comfortable, but by the second half of the race the temperature climbs and you may find yourself managing heat more than you expected. It's rarely brutal, but don't underestimate a warm afternoon on a loop course with some climbing. Hydrate early and don't let the comfortable start fool you.
