Race Overview

EST. 2007

The race starts at Plaza de la Ciudadanía, right in front of La Moneda, Chile's government palace. It's a striking place to toe the line. From there the course winds through downtown neighborhoods and spreads out across the city. The field is large, the atmosphere is loud, and the autumn timing in the Southern Hemisphere means May temperatures that are generally manageable. The course has some gentle rolling to it, so don't expect a dead-flat PR day, but it's honest and runnable. Autumn in Santiago can feel fresh at the gun and warm by the back half, so start controlled.

This is a valid Boston qualifier, which draws a solid mix of competitive and recreational runners from across South America and beyond. Registration is open, and foreign runners can sign up directly without navigating a lottery. Spots do fill, so if you're coming from abroad, register early once the window opens in October. It's one of the bigger races in South America, and the energy in the city around race weekend reflects that. If you want a marathon experience outside the usual European or North American circuit, this is a genuinely good one to put on the list.

Different start and finish

Santiago's point-to-point layout starts at Plaza de la Ciudadanía near La Moneda palace and winds through the city at roughly 520 meters above sea level. The course sits between a low of about 1,745 feet and a high near 2,180 feet, so there is some moderate undulation to manage, but the net elevation change is essentially flat. The modest altitude is unlikely to affect most runners significantly, but it is worth accounting for if you are coming from sea level. The rolling character means you won't run a pure downhill PR, but disciplined pacing through the middle miles leaves you in decent shape for a strong finish. Not USATF certified, but it is a valid Boston qualifier.

What to expect

May is autumn in Santiago, so the morning start is cool and comfortable. By the time you're deep into the back half, temperatures can climb into the mid-70s, which is warm enough to matter if you're chasing a time goal. Start conservatively and hydrate from mile one. The wide diurnal range means you'll want a throwaway layer for the corral but race kit only once you're moving. Overall it's a reasonable window for fast running, just don't sleep on the afternoon heat building late in the race.
