Race Overview

EST. 2025

San Antonio goes in December, which is about as good as Texas gets for running. The start is at Main Plaza in the heart of downtown at 7:15 in the morning, and the course loops through the city before finishing at Hemisfair. The River Walk area and the streets around it give the early miles some real character. The crowd support is solid through the downtown sections, and the city has enough going on that you're not staring at empty roads.

The course rolls. It's not flat, and it's not a screaming net downhill either. Nearly all the gain comes back as loss, so you're working up and running down throughout. That means your legs will feel it by mile 20 if you went out too hot. Be patient in the first half. It's open registration through RunSignup, so getting in is straightforward, just don't sleep on it too long if capacity is a concern. A seven-hour time limit means a wide range of runners are out there with you. If you're chasing a BQ, the course is certified and qualifies, but you'll need to run it honestly.

The course is nearly net-neutral, with just under 910 feet of gain and a matching loss spread across the loop. Expect rolling stretches rather than one sustained climb, which means no single brutal wall but also no long free-fall to coast on. Pacing discipline matters throughout. The highest point sits around 814 feet and the lowest near 622, so the vertical range is moderate. For runners chasing a Boston qualifier, the course is certified and legal, but the terrain won't gift you free minutes. Target even splits and resist surging on any downhill section early in the race, as the rollers return.

What to expect

December in San Antonio means a cold-to-comfortable window. The gun goes off at 7:15 AM and it'll feel legitimately chilly at the start, so plan for throwaway layers in the corral. By the back half of the race, temperatures climb into the mid-60s, which is pleasant if you're moving well. The conditions generally favor a decent effort, but don't let the cool start fool you into overdressing or going out too fast before you warm up.
