Race Overview

EST. 2020

Lubbock is a straightforward race in the best sense. You line up in downtown Lubbock, run a multi-loop course across the flat West Texas plains, and find out exactly what shape you're in. There's no clever scenery to distract you and no big downhill to bail you out. It's just you and the miles.

The course runs at over 3,000 feet above sea level, and if you're coming from lower elevation that matters more than the numbers suggest. Give yourself a few days to adjust if you can. The multi-loop format keeps you near the start area, which is convenient for spectators and means aid stations stay familiar. Registration is open, no lottery or qualifier required, so getting in is easy. Just sign up through the official site and show up ready to work. If a PR is the goal, this course gives you a fair shot at it.

The course sits on the South Plains at roughly 3,200 feet elevation, with a net gain of 477 feet spread across a multi-loop layout. That net-positive figure means the climbs are not offset by equal descents, so expect cumulative leg fatigue rather than a free return. The elevation band is narrow, around 94 feet total relief, suggesting rolling rather than sharp hills. At altitude, even modest grades carry a cost on effort. The multi-loop format helps with pacing discipline and crowd support at aid stations, but mentally it requires breaking the race into chunks. Plan conservatively on the first loop and hold back until the final miles.

What to expect

Late October in Lubbock means a wide gap between the start and midday. The morning gun can feel genuinely cold, so bring a throwaway layer for the corral. By the back half of the race, temps can climb into the mid-to-upper 70s and the West Texas sun has nothing blocking it. Dress for a cold start but plan for a warm finish. If it's a calm day it can feel fast; if the wind picks up across the open plains, you'll feel it.
