Race Overview

EST. 2010

Oakland is a course that rewards honest pacing and punishes runners who treat the flat early miles near the waterfront as a free pass. The race starts at the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts and quickly lets you settle into a rhythm along the shoreline. That stretch feels easy. Don't go with it. The middle section moves into the city's hillier neighborhoods, and the climbing is spread out enough that it sneaks up on you if your legs are already tired. The good news is the course rolls back down toward downtown in the final miles, so there is something left to run for at the end.

This is a mid-size race with a genuinely local feel. It is a Boston qualifier, though the rolling course means you will need to run a controlled, disciplined effort to hit your number rather than just showing up. The weather in late March typically cooperates. Cool mornings, mild finish. Good conditions for a solid effort. Registration is open to anyone, so there is no lottery stress, and the charity entry option through Run Local is there if you want to attach a cause to your miles. BART can get you to the start without the car headache. If you want a low-drama entry and a race that takes you through a real city without a lot of corporate shine, Oakland is worth the trip.

The course is a loop with roughly 760 feet of gain spread across 26.2 miles, so it is not flat but never brutal. The net elevation is nearly zero, meaning what goes up comes down. Expect the bulk of climbing in the middle miles as the route moves away from the waterfront and into Oakland's hillier neighborhoods. The lowest points hug the shoreline near the start and finish. Pacing conservatively through miles 8 to 16 pays off when the course drops back toward downtown. Surface is mostly road. No single climb is long enough to blow your race, but the cumulative rolling terrain adds up if you go out too fast.

What to expect

Late March in Oakland usually means a cool start in the upper 40s and a finish somewhere in the low 60s. That gap is your friend if you dress for it. A light throwaway layer at the gun makes sense, and you'll be glad to shed it by mile 5 or 6. The afternoons can warm up faster than you expect on clear days, so if you are chasing a time, get after it early. Wind off the bay is possible on the waterfront stretch. Overall it is a reasonable window for a fast effort.
