Race Overview

EST. 2008

Two Cities runs through Fresno and Clovis on a flat, looping course, and flat is the word that matters most here. You start and finish at Clovis Community College, and from the gun the road is about as even as Central Valley terrain gets. There are no significant hills to plan around, no brutal late-mile climbs. What you get instead is a course that rewards smart, even pacing. The loop format means you pass familiar landmarks more than once, which some runners love for mental checkpoints and others find tough around mile 18 when the novelty wears off. Don't let the easy first loop tempt you into banking time you'll regret later.

This is a mid-size community race with a relaxed atmosphere. The field is small enough that you'll rarely feel crowded, and the organization is straightforward. Because it's a Boston qualifier on a flat course, a good chunk of the field is chasing a specific time, so you'll find people running with purpose around you. November in Fresno tends to be mild, which helps. Registration is open, prices go up as race day approaches, and the deadline is basically the day before the race, so there's no scramble to get in early. If you want a no-drama qualifier attempt without the lottery stress, this is a solid option.

The course is essentially flat, with only about 350 feet of cumulative gain and loss over the full distance and a net elevation of zero. The highest and lowest points are barely 50 feet apart, so there are no meaningful climbs or descents to race around. The multi-loop design means you cover familiar ground more than once, which can help with pacing but demands mental discipline late. Turns are more frequent than a point-to-point course, so watch your tangents. Surface is paved throughout. The flat profile favors even splits; resist going out fast on the first loop.

What to expect

November in Fresno means a cool morning and a mild afternoon. You'll likely start in the low-to-mid 40s, so a throwaway layer or arm sleeves make sense for the first few miles. By the time you're deep into the back half, temps climb into the mid-to-upper 60s, which is comfortable but not cold. The conditions generally favor a decent day, especially if you shed layers early and don't overdress. Wind is rarely a major factor. Overall it's one of the better weather windows for a California fall race.
