Race Overview

EST. 1996

Mesa Falls starts you up in Targhee National Forest near 6,000 feet and runs you downhill most of the way into Ashton. The net drop is real and you'll feel it in your legs by the finish, but in the best way. The field is small, the roads are quiet, and there's none of the crowd noise or big-race chaos. It's just you, the course, and the trees for most of the morning. The one thing worth flagging: the altitude. If you're coming from sea level, give yourself a day or two to adjust before race day.

This is genuinely one of the more accessible BQ-friendly courses in the region. Open registration means you can sign up without a lottery or a qualifying time, just go online and grab a spot before it fills. The finish is at the local high school on Main Street in Ashton, which is a small town, so plan your lodging early. Rexburg is your best bet, about 25 minutes out. The race runs in mid-July, so mornings start cool but it can warm up fast. Start conservative and use the downhill to carry you home.

The course runs point-to-point from Targhee National Forest down into Ashton, shedding roughly 880 feet over the full distance against only 300 feet of gain. The net drop is meaningful and front-loaded in places, so the early miles can feel deceptively easy at altitude above 6,000 feet. Resist banking too hard on the descent. The back half flattens out as you approach town, so any time you want to make up comes before that. Surface and turns are not detailed in available data, but the forest setting suggests some road variation. Not USATF certified, so times cannot be used for official standards.

What to expect

July in eastern Idaho means a cool start and a warm finish. The morning gun is comfortable, but by the time you're in the back half you can be looking at low-80s and direct sun. The altitude keeps it from feeling oppressive early, but don't let that lull you. Carry hydration or plan to use every aid station. It's not reliably a cool-day fast-course combination; you're racing the heat as much as the clock.
