Race Overview

EST. 1978

The Melbourne Marathon starts and finishes at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, one of the great sporting venues in the world. You run out of the stadium, wind through the city streets and along the edge of Port Phillip Bay, then turn around and come back. The course is flat, the roads are wide, and if conditions cooperate it's a genuinely fast day. Running into the MCG through the players' tunnel to finish on the ground is the one moment that gets people talking. It earns it.

The course suits a PR attempt if you're ready for it. The net elevation is negligible, but an out-and-back means the wind can cut both ways, so check the forecast the night before. Entry is through a ballot lottery, a time qualification standard, or a registered charity place. The ballot is free to enter and you're only charged if selected, which is a good setup, but the general allocation goes fast. If you miss the window, a charity bib or qualifying time are your best options. It's a well-run race with a big field and a city that knows how to host an event. Worth the trip.

The course is nearly flat, sitting just metres above sea level throughout with a net elevation change of under 50 feet. Total climbing is modest and spread across the full distance, so there are no single punishing hills to budget for. The out-and-back layout means the second half mirrors the first. Expect a gradual, runnable ascent in the opening kilometres before dropping toward the bay, then a gentle return climb in the final stretch into the MCG. Wind off Port Phillip Bay can be a factor; if it's at your back on the outward leg, prepare to work harder coming home. The course favours negative splitting if you resist going out too fast.

What to expect

October in Melbourne means spring, and race day usually feels cool and manageable. The morning start can be crisp, so a throwaway layer in the corral is a smart call. By the time you're on the back half the temperature rises enough to notice, especially on exposed sections along the bay. Melbourne weather is famously unpredictable though, so check the forecast in the days before and don't assume. On a good day the conditions genuinely favour fast running.
