Race Overview

EST. 2013

The Marshall University Marathon is a small, no-frills race built around one thing: getting you a fast time. It starts and finishes at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, and the course runs through Huntington on a USATF-certified layout that is about as close to flat as you'll find anywhere in this part of the country. The multi-loop format means you'll see familiar stretches more than once, which some runners love for pacing and others find mentally tricky. Be honest with yourself about that before you line up. The field is small, so you won't have crowds carrying you through the back half. Settle in, run your own pace, and don't go out chasing the leaders.

This is a genuine Boston qualifier candidate if the flat course suits you. Registration is open to everyone through RunSignup, and early sign-up gets you the best price, so lock it in well ahead of the July cutoff. Huntington is easy to get to, parking is free and close to the start, and hotels are a short drive away. It's the kind of race where the logistics just work. If you're chasing a qualifier or a personal best and want a low-stress setup to do it, this one is worth the trip.

Start and finish in one place

With only 354 feet of gain and a near-zero net elevation, this course is about as flat as West Virginia gets. The highest and lowest points are separated by less than 40 feet, so there are no significant climbs to manage. The multi-loop format means you see the same terrain more than once, which helps with pacing but can test focus late. Plan your effort evenly from the gun; there is no dramatic descent to bank time on and no single hard section to simply survive. The flat profile rewards runners who can hold steady effort through the back half rather than reacting to terrain.

What to expect

Early November in Huntington means you'll start in the cold. The morning can be in the upper 30s at the gun, so dress in throwaway layers for the corral. By the time you're deep in the race it warms up, but it stays cool enough that overheating is rarely the problem. That temperature window is actually ideal for a fast effort. You're much more likely to deal with a brisk headwind on exposed stretches than any heat. Plan for cold hands at the start and you'll be fine.
