Race Overview

EST. 1973

The Long Island Marathon is a small, no-fuss race held inside Eisenhower Park, about 25 miles east of Manhattan. The course is a multi-loop layout that stays flat and paved the whole way. You're not getting big-city crowds or a point-to-point tour of anything, but that's kind of the point. If you want a quiet environment where you can actually lock into your pace and run your own race, this delivers. The park keeps things contained and logistically simple. Parking is easy, the start is straightforward, and there's none of the corralling chaos you get at bigger events.

This is a legitimate PR course if you're ready to race it that way. The elevation is minimal and the rollers never stack up into anything serious. A real fraction of the field earns Boston qualifying marks here, so it's worth taking seriously as a target race. Registration is open, pricing is rolling, and the earlier you sign up the less you pay. The field is small, which means you may spend stretches of the back half running without many people around you. Don't let that unsettle your rhythm. Settle in early, stay patient through the loops, and trust the flat profile to do its job.

The course is a multi-loop layout through Eisenhower Park with a net elevation of essentially zero. Total gain and loss are each around 300 feet across 26.2 miles, spread in small, gradual rollers rather than any concentrated climb. The highest point is just over 100 feet and the lowest around 60 feet, so there's no single hill to dread. Pacing implications are favorable: the absence of a hard climb means you can hold an even effort, but the loop structure can test focus late. Surface is mostly paved park roads with moderate turns on the loops. Exposure is moderate, with limited shade.

What to expect

Early May on Long Island can feel like two different races depending on the year. Mornings often start cool and crisp, which is great for the gun, but by midday you might be running in the low 60s with some humidity creeping in. It's generally a decent window for fast racing, but it's not guaranteed cold. Have a throwaway layer for the corral and don't bank on a perfectly cool finish. If it comes up warm, hydrate from mile one.
