Race Overview

EST. 2002

Louisville in late April is festival week, and you feel that from the start. The course loops through the city on rolling roads, nothing extreme, but relentless enough that you can't just lock into one gear and zone out. The crowds are solid and the city is genuinely buzzing, which helps in the back half when the legs start to complain. The one moment worth mentioning: running through downtown Louisville with the Derby energy everywhere around you is a real thing. It is hard to describe until you are in it.

This is not the flattest course in the region, so come in with realistic expectations about your goal time. The constant rolling terrain means you will earn every split. That said, it is a Boston qualifier and a USATF-certified course, so there is nothing tricky about it. Entry is open registration, which makes it a genuinely accessible race. If you are thinking about it, just sign up. You will not stress about a lottery or a qualifying standard. Show up ready to run the hills honestly and you will have a good day.

Start and finish in one place

The course is a loop with nearly equal gain and loss, so there is no net elevation advantage to chase. The 148-foot range between low and high points means you will encounter rolling terrain throughout rather than one major climb. Expect gradual undulations that reward even pacing over surging. Because the elevation resets close to zero by the finish, a well-paced effort can still yield a solid time, but the constant rolling makes a PR less forgiving than a point-to-point downhill course. Surface is standard road. The loop structure means you may cross your own path, which can help with crowd support at certain spots.

What to expect

Late April in Louisville can go a few different ways. You might get a cool, comfortable morning that rewards racing. You might get a warm, humid day that makes the rolling terrain feel twice as hard. The average high reaches the low 70s by race time, so the back half of the race can turn into heat management if the morning warms quickly. Start conservatively and hydrate from the first aid station, not when you feel thirsty.
