Race Overview

EST. 2000

The Hatfield-McCoy Marathon is a small, personal race set in the hills where Kentucky meets West Virginia. It starts in Williamson and loops through the kind of terrain that doesn't let you coast anywhere. The hills start early and they keep coming. You'll climb past 1,200 feet at the highest stretch, then work your way back down over rolling ground to the finish. The crowds are small but loud, and the locals genuinely care that you're out there. The pre-race pasta dinner comes with registration, which tells you something about the vibe.

This is not a flat course and it's not a fast one for most people. The total elevation gain means your legs will feel it in the final miles, so don't go out hard just because the early miles feel manageable. It runs in mid-June, and the heat can add up by the time you're in the back half of the course. Hydrate from mile one. The race is open registration, so getting in is easy. The challenge is purely the course and the conditions. If you're looking for a low-key race with real character and a tough hill workout baked in, this one's worth the drive.

Start and finish in one place

This loop course starts in Williamson and rolls through Appalachian hill country, accumulating over 1,500 feet of gain with no net descent to offset it. The elevation profile is cumulative rather than dramatic, meaning no single brutal climb but relentless rolling terrain that taxes the legs across the back half. The highest point sits around 1,275 feet, reached somewhere in the middle miles, with the lowest point near 660 feet at the start and finish. Runners chasing time need to run the early climbs conservatively. The descents offer brief recovery but not enough to bank time against the total gain. Not a PR course for most runners.

What to expect

Mid-June in the Appalachian border hills means a cool-ish morning that can turn into a warm afternoon grind. You'll likely start in the mid-50s, which feels comfortable. But by the time you're deep into the back half, temperatures can push into the mid-70s and the humidity adds weight to every mile. This is not a weather window that favors fast racing. Plan to manage heat, not chase splits. Hydrate early and stay ahead of it.
