Race Overview

EST. 2009

The Illinois Marathon is a flat, open course through Champaign-Urbana and the University of Illinois campus. It's the kind of race where the course genuinely gets out of your way. No serious hills, no long bridges, nothing tricky in the elevation profile. What you bring to the start is pretty much what you get out at the finish.

The course runs as a loop, which means you'll see varied stretches of campus and surrounding neighborhoods rather than retracing your steps. The one thing to plan around is wind. Central Illinois is exposed, and if it's blowing on race day, you'll feel it in the open stretches, especially late. Don't let a tailwind in the first half pull you out faster than your plan. Registration is open and fills on a rolling basis, with fees going up as the date gets closer, so sign up early if you're in. If you're chasing a Boston qualifier, this is a realistic course to do it on.

Start and finish in one place

This loop course sits on pancake-flat central Illinois terrain, with a net drop of under 30 feet across the full distance. Total gain and loss are modest and spread across the course rather than concentrated in a single climb, so there are no meaningful hills to plan around. The route passes through the University of Illinois campus and surrounding neighborhoods. Pacing strategy is straightforward: there is nothing to save yourself for or recover from. If you go out too fast, the flat back half gives you nowhere to hide. Surface is predominantly paved road. Exposure to wind can be a factor on open stretches, particularly later in the race when fatigue sets in.

What to expect

Late April in Champaign can swing. The morning start tends to be cool, sometimes cold enough to want a throwaway layer at the line. By the back half of the race you'll likely warm into it, but don't count on it being comfortable the whole way. The bigger variable is wind. Central Illinois is flat and open, and a headwind in the final miles can turn a PR day into a race-the-conditions day. Check the forecast in the days before and adjust your early pace expectations if it looks breezy.
