Race Overview

EST. 2003

The race starts and finishes at Garmin's world headquarters in Olathe, which is a genuinely cool detail and not just a gimmick. The course runs point-to-point through the Kansas City suburbs, and it has a real rhythm to it. Rolling hills show up throughout, so you're never fully coasting, but nothing on the route is steep enough to blow up your day if you're patient. The crowd support is solid for a mid-size race, and the Garmin connection means the production feels tighter than you might expect. Don't go out hard on the early downhills. The course gives them back.

This is a legit Boston qualifier, and the field is big enough to feel energized but small enough that you won't spend the first three miles dodging people. Registration is open, so there's no lottery stress. You sign up, you show up. Olathe is a quick drive from Kansas City, so logistics are easy if you're flying in. One thing worth knowing: no refunds or deferrals, so make sure your training block is on track before you commit. If you're hunting a BQ and want a well-run race without the circus of a major, this one is worth the trip.

Different start and finish

The course is point-to-point with equal gain and loss, so the net elevation is flat but the legs aren't. Nearly 900 feet of climbing is spread across the route, meaning you'll face a series of rolling hills rather than one big climb. The highest point sits just over 1,000 feet and the low around 850, so no single grade is extreme. Pacing discipline matters early: the rollers can lure you out faster than you should go. Save something for the back half, where accumulated climbing will find tired legs. The finish back at Garmin HQ gives you a known landmark to push toward.

What to expect

Late April in Olathe can swing, so come prepared for both ends. The morning gun often goes off in the low 40s, which feels cold in the corral but you'll warm into it quickly once you're moving. By the back half, temperatures can climb into the high 50s or low 60s, which is comfortable for most runners but warmer than ideal if you're pushing hard. Dress in throwaway layers for the start and don't overdress for the finish. Wind on open suburban roads is the wildcard worth watching in the forecast.
