Race Overview

EST. 1981

The Zurich Marathon runs along the shores of Lake Zurich and through the city's compact core. You start near the Quaibrücke, and the lake is with you for much of the early going. It's a clean, well-run race in a city that handles logistics well. The crowds are genuine and the course is easy to follow. The out-and-back format means you'll see other runners heading the other direction, which some people love and some find mentally tricky. Either way, use that turnaround to check in with yourself honestly. Be patient on the way out.

The course isn't flat. There's real elevation gain spread across both halves, so if you treat the first half as a freebie, the back half will charge you for it. That said, the records show it's possible to run very well here with the right approach. Entry is open registration with tiered pricing, and slots go earlier each year, so book as soon as the window opens. The field is a manageable size, which means you won't spend the first five miles in gridlock. It's a legitimate Boston qualifier, and plenty of people come here specifically for that. If that's your goal, this is a solid shot.

The out-and-back layout means you run the same terrain twice, which helps with pacing but removes any surprise. Total elevation gain sits just under 500 feet with no net descent to bail you out, so what you climb you also lose across the course. Expect modest rolling through the lakeshore sections rather than one sharp climb, but the accumulated gain means the back half will test legs that went out too fast. Surface is predominantly road. The turnaround also acts as a natural checkpoint: if you're struggling at the halfway mark, dial back. The records suggest the course rewards fitness, but it is not a flat point-to-point and should not be treated like one.

What to expect

April in Zurich tends to start cool and crisp at the gun, in the mid-40s, which is comfortable for running hard. By the time you're deep into the back half, temperatures usually climb toward the high 50s. That range is generally favorable, but don't assume it stays easy. The city can be breezy along the lake, and cloud cover varies. You'll likely want a throwaway layer at the start, but shed it early. It's more often a good-weather day than not, and the conditions here tend to favor racing rather than just surviving.
