Race Overview

EST. 1984

Buenos Aires is a big-city marathon that actually delivers on the city part. The course loops through the heart of the Argentine capital in late September, when the weather is genuinely good for running. Temperatures sit in the 50s and low 60s Fahrenheit, humidity is moderate, and the city is alive. The crowd support through central Buenos Aires is real and loud in stretches, especially as the course moves through some of the denser neighborhoods. And because the course is flat, essentially no net gain from start to finish, you can actually run the race you planned. Don't waste that by going out too fast in the first 10k. The flat profile and cool temperatures make this one of the more PR-friendly options in South America, so it is worth being patient early and saving something for the back half.

This is a Boston qualifier and the flat course means that standard is genuinely reachable here if you are trained for it. Registration is open, no lottery, no qualifier required. You sign up through the Ticketear platform and your spot is yours until the race fills. It does fill, so don't sit on it once you decide. The field is a few thousand finishers, big enough to feel like an event but not overwhelming. If you want a fast race in a city that actually gives you something to look at along the way, Buenos Aires is worth the trip.

Start and finish in one place

The Buenos Aires Marathon runs a loop course with essentially no net elevation change, making it one of the flatter marathon options in South America. The absence of significant climbing means pacing can stay consistent from start to finish, which is a genuine asset for runners targeting a PR or a Boston qualifier. The course runs through central Buenos Aires, so expect some turns as it moves through city blocks, though no single stretch punishes you with a sharp grade. Mild late-September temperatures in the low 50s to mid-60s Fahrenheit support good running conditions. Light to moderate winds are common, and because the course loops, wind exposure may shift direction mid-race. Plan for the possibility of rain.

What to expect

September in Buenos Aires puts you at the start line in cool, jacket-worthy air that feels genuinely good for running. By the later miles it warms up, but not so much that you're managing heat. This is one of the more comfortable windows you'll find for a marathon in South America. A light throwaway layer for the corral is worth it, but once you're moving you'll be fine.
