Race Overview

EST. 1978

Barcelona runs a full loop through the city, and the course is genuinely fast. You start and finish in the same area, passing through wide boulevards, the Gothic Quarter, and along the seafront. The temperatures in March sit in that sweet spot where you're not overdressed and not cooking. The crowd support in the city center is strong, and there's one stretch along the waterfront where the whole thing just opens up and you feel like you're actually running well. Use that stretch to settle, not to surge.

The course has some gentle rolls but nothing that should derail a good race plan. It's a loop, so you'll get a sense of what's ahead as the miles progress. Registration opens in June the year before and fills up fast, so if you're planning a trip around this one, get in early. Tiered pricing means the cheapest spots go first. It's a big field, it's open entry, and the conditions are usually on your side. If a PR is the goal, this is a reasonable place to chase one.

Start and finish in one place

Barcelona's loop course sits close to sea level with modest total gain spread across the route. The course stays largely flat through the city center and seafront stretches, with the main elevation coming from gentle rises rather than any single sharp climb. Net elevation matches total gain, meaning no meaningful downhill advantage. The mild March temperatures and minimal wind typically support fast efforts. Pacing conservatively early pays off, as the back half offers no significant descent to bank time on. Surface is road throughout, with turns through urban streets requiring attention in the middle miles.

What to expect

March in Barcelona is mild but can surprise you. The gun goes off in the low-to-mid 40s, which feels cool at first, but you'll warm up fast once you're moving. By the later miles the temperature is usually in the high 50s, comfortable enough that overheating isn't a big concern for most runners. It's a genuinely good window for a fast day. Dress in light layers you can shed early, and don't overthink it.

What to expect

Most travelling runners fly into BCN, about 8 miles from the start, right on the doorstep by rideshare or transit, roughly a 13-minute trip. Stay close to the start in Barcelona so you're not fighting race-morning closures and transit on tired legs. Arrive a day early to clear the expo and bib pickup, and build in buffer for gear-check and corral entry.
