Race Overview

EST. 1931

Seoul runs point-to-point from Gwanghwamun Plaza, right in the city center, down to Jamsil Olympic Stadium in the southeast. The start area is surrounded by old city gates and government buildings, and the atmosphere before gun time is genuinely electric. From there the course traces wide urban boulevards and riverside paths, staying almost entirely flat. The finish inside the Olympic Stadium, running the track to the line, is the moment people remember. Worth every step of the training block.

The course is as honest a PR setup as you'll find in Asia. Flat, fast, and in mid-March before the heat arrives. Entry is open but first-come, first-served, and you need a qualifying marathon certificate under five hours to get a bib. Registration opens in early July and typically sells out within minutes, so set your alarm and be ready. A Seoul bib is a hard ticket. If you get one, don't go out too fast in the first half on those wide roads.

Different start and finish

The course runs point-to-point from Gwanghwamun Plaza to Jamsil Olympic Stadium, covering central and southeastern Seoul. Net elevation is slightly downhill, with minimal cumulative gain and a highest point well under 200 feet. The profile is effectively flat for pacing purposes. Most of the course follows wide urban boulevards, meaning good footing and predictable pace. Wind can become a factor on exposed riverside stretches. There are no significant climbs to manage, so the main tactical challenge is resisting early pace surges in a large, fast field. Save something for the final miles before the stadium finish.

What to expect

Mid-March in Seoul is cool and can be sharp at the start. You'll likely want a throwaway layer at the gun, but you'll warm into it by mile five or six. The back half tends to be comfortable for racing. Wind is the variable to watch, especially on exposed stretches near the Han River. Overall this is a good window for fast running, but it's not a guarantee of calm conditions.
