Race Overview

EST. 1984

Vienna runs point to point from the Kaisermühlen district through the city and finishes near the Burgtheater. The first few miles ease you in along the Danube Canal, and the road is wide enough that you won't feel boxed in. Then the course swings through the Prater, which is flat and fast. Be patient there. The real payoff is the Ringstrasse: broad, lined with monumental buildings, and buzzing with spectators. That stretch through the heart of Vienna is the moment the race earns its reputation. You finish on a flat run-in near the Burgtheater, and if you've managed your effort well, you'll have something left for it.

This is a genuine Boston qualifier course with enough flat miles to chase a time goal. The open registration means there's no lottery to stress over, just first-come, first-served when the window opens in April. Sign up early because spots do fill. April in Vienna can be cool in the morning and mild by the midway point, which suits most runners well. Bring a throwaway layer for the corral and expect to shed it by mile three. If you want a fast European marathon without the lottery gamble, Vienna is a strong answer.

Different start and finish

Vienna's point-to-point layout carries a modest net gain spread across the full distance, so there is no single punishing climb, but the course is not dead flat. The route along the Donaukanal and through the Prater is largely flat and straight, rewarding even pacing. The Ringstrasse section in the final third provides the most memorable stretch and tends to be well-protected from wind. Watch for gentle undulations in the middle miles and avoid banking too much time early. The finish near the Burgtheater is essentially flat. A disciplined first half sets up a strong close.

What to expect

April in Vienna starts cool, usually in the low 40s at the gun, and climbs into the mid-to-upper 50s by the time you're on the Ringstrasse. That's a pretty good window for racing: a crisp start you'll warm into, and rarely hot enough to cost you time in the back half. Wind can be a factor on the Danube Canal stretch early on, so don't fight it. Dress in layers you can ditch, and you'll be comfortable from start to finish.
